Something in Shakespeare also allowed Goiethe to come face-to-face with his own ideas and ideals. When you read Goethe’s thoughts on Shakespeare, you realize he is expressing more about his own feelings about encountering Shakespeare than about Shakespeare himself. Under the English writer’s influence, Goethe wrote his first major work, which would begin his ascent to becoming the greatest of German authors: “The Sorrows of Young Werther,” published in 1774. What Goethe did in ‘Werther’ was revolutionary; the novel was to become a watershed in the development of German literature. A stoory of a youthful emotion and passion, it reflects Goethe’s own disastrous love affair with a friend’s finance, and it ends in tragedy: tormented by unrequited love, Werther shoots himself. . . . .
