If a turtle is pleasing to the eye, then the turtle reproduced by a great sculptor possesses a symbolic capacity that no real turtle has ever had; and this was known even to Greek sculptors. But for the Decadent the process was a different one. Des Esseintes chooses to place a turtle on a light-colored carpet in order to obtain a contrast between the golden and silvery hues of the weave and the raw sienna tones of the animal’s carapace. But the combination does not satisfy him and he has the turtle’s back encrusted with precious stones of many different colours, thus composing a dazzling arabesque, which irradiates light “like a Visigothic targe inlaid with shining scales, the handiwork of some Barbaric craftsman.” . . .
