. . . . the view of Sir Charles Lyell, the geologist whose seminal ‘Principles of Geology’ had been published between 1830 and 1833 and ‘Geological Evidences of the Antiquity of Man’ in 1863. He quoted Lyell at length from the latter vaolue about a period when the land was thought to have been at least 500 fet above the present level, followed by one of submergence with ‘only the tops of the mountains being left above water’ and then by a further period of elevated land when the bed of the glacial sea ‘with its marine shells and erratic blocks, was laid dry.’ Lyell had suggested that the ‘grand oscillation of submergence and re-emergence had most likely taken 224,000 years. ~ Page 154 - ~ "After the Ice" ~ Steven Mithen Author
