A village in the Petite Camargue. At the beginning only some fishing cottages, it gained importance in the sixteenth century when the Rhone created a new channel directly from Aigues Mortes to the sea. Later on this communication became a canal, in the picture you see its last part, just before flowing into the sea. The village of fishers and farmers became a separate commune in 1879 and turned to tourism at the end of the 19th century. Nowadays is still very frequented by tourists. The Obélisque d'Arles ("Arles Obelisk") is a 4th-century Roman obelisk, now erected in the centre of the Place de la République, in front of the town hall of Arles, was first erected under the Roman emperor Constantine II in the centre of the spina of the Roman circus of Arles. After the circus was abandoned in the 6th century, the obelisk fell down and was broken in two parts. It was rediscovered in 14th century. And it was re-erected in its current location in 17th century on top of a pedestal designed by Jacques Peytret. The fountain at the base was designed by Antoine Laurent Dantan in 19th century. Un quadrato di cielo catalano teso su un Giardino delle Meraviglie: questo il chiostro di Elne, con la sua popolazione immobile di uomini, bestie e piante fra reale e immaginario, scolpita da antiche mani in un marmo dai teneri colori pastello. Meraviglia che questo gioiello sia potuto sfuggire nei secoli all'incuria, alla violenza e all'avidità. Nei primi decenni del '900, ad esempio, i tesori romanici della regione furono saccheggiati da loschi personaggi, come un certo antiquario, che vendette due volte il chiostro di St.Génis des Fontaines, o il leggendario George Gray Barnard, rapace pseudo-artista americano, che fece mercato del chiostro di St.Michel di Cuxa, spedendolo a New York. Anche allora Elne rimase intatta. Alta sulla pianura e ammantata nella sua dignità millenaria, Elne che sopravvisse a invasioni, assedi e saccheggi sfuggì anche alla moderna minaccia della venalità che nulla ama né rispetta. Simbolo della città di Genova, sita sul promontorio di Capo di Faro, la Lanterna, con i suoi 77 metri di altezza, è il faro più alto del Mediterraneo, il secondo in Europa. L’attuale costruzione risale al 1543, ma fin dal XII secolo esisteva una torre di struttura simile, nata come torre di guardia per annunciare l’arrivo di imbarcazioni sospette e divenuta nel tempo anche faro, sulla cui sommità si bruciavano fascine per segnalare ai naviganti l’accesso al porto. Nel 1326 vi si installò la prima lanterna ad olio di oliva, la cui luce era concentrata in un fascio grazie a cristalli trasparenti prodotti da maestri vetrai liguri e veneziani. Nel Quattrocento la torre fu adibita a prigione e custodì, tra gli altri, il re di Cipro. Agli inizi del Cinquecento fu edificata la fortezza della Briglia, voluta da Luigi XII per le truppe che presidiavano la città: i genovesi, insorti contro i francesi, la bombardarono, danneggiando anche la Lanterna, ridotta a “mezza torre”. Nel 1543 essa venne ricostruita e le antiche merlature furono sostituite. Da allora la Lanterna superò senza gravi conseguenze il bombardamento navale del Re Sole alla fine del Seicento, i combattimenti del 1746 dopo la rivolta di Portoria, i bombardamenti della seconda guerra mondiale, nonché innumerevoli momenti di intemperie naturali (fino a quando, nel 1778, non fu dotata di impianto parafulmine). In tempi più recenti la potenza del faro aumentò notevolmente, sia per l’introduzione di più moderni sistemi ottici (data 1840 il sistema rotante con lenti di Fresnel), sia per l’introduzione di nuovi combustibili: il gas di acetilene (1898), poi il petrolio pressurizzato (1905), fino all’elettrificazione del 1936. Un po' di storia, presa da Wikipedia: In origine gli abitanti vivevano di pesca, caccia e della produzione del sale prodotto in numerose piccole paludi salate situate lungo la riva del mare. Nel Medioevo tutta la regione era sotto il controllo dei monaci dell'Abbazia di Psalmodie. Nel 1240 Luigi IX di Francia, con l'obiettivo di ottenere per il suo regno uno sbocco sul Mediterraneo, ottenne dall'Abbazia, grazie ad uno scambio, il controllo del villaggio e delle terre circostanti; insieme ottiene anche il controllo delle imposte sulla produzione del sale. Luigi IX fece costruire una strada di accesso tra le paludi ed una torre, Tour Carbonniere, con funzioni di vedetta e controllo di accesso al villaggio. In seguito, tra il 1242 e il 1248, fece costruire una torre di maggiori dimensioni, Tour Constance,e un castello, oggi scomparso, sulle rovine dell'antica torre Metafère, con lo scopo di proteggere la città e il suo nascente porto e alloggiare la guarnigione. Fu dal porto di Aigues-Mortes che Luigi IX salpò due volte per partecipare alla settima crociata, nel 1248, ed alla ottava crociata nel 1270 su flotte interamente armate dai genovesi. Da questi fatti deriva la credenza popolare che in epoca medievale Aigues-Mortes fosse direttamente sul mare. In effetti il porto, oggi parzialmente interrato, si trovava nello stagno della Marette ed era collegato al mare dal Canal-Viel.

at the right hand the Neptune The Neptune is a ship replica of a 17th-century Spanish galleon. The ship was built in 1985 for Roman Polanski's film Pirates, where she portrayed the Spanish ship of the same name. An accurate replica above the waterline, but sporting a steel hull and a 400 HP auxiliary engine, the Neptune is currently a tourist attraction in the port of Genoa, where its interior can be visited.
