History:
The huge quadrilateral building of the Hôtel-Dieu was built in the 16th and 17th centuries during a period of great prosperity and modernisation in the city. In keeping with the city's tradition of hospitality, the Hôtel-Dieu was host to a famous inmate in the person of Vincent Van Gogh (he was committed here after the infamous episode of cutting off his left earlobe in December 1888) , who painted several pictures of it.
The courtyard has been extensively planted out to resemble as closely as possible his famous painting "Le Jardin de l'Hôtel de Dieu".
