Motor Luggage Van 68010. Ten of these battery electric units were built 1951 - 1961 for use on the boat trains from London Victoria to Dover and Folkestone. One or two of them were usually coupled to the front of 12 car EMUs. Later reclassified as Class 419, they were all withdrawn in 1991/92 when the boat trains ceased running with the closure of Dover Western Docks. This example is one of 3 preserved at the Eden Valley Railway at Warcop. Tue18Sep12

The Maunsell designed 4COR (CORridor) and 4RES (REStaurant) units were built for the 1937 Portsmouth electrification. In 1961 3 of the 4RES units were converted to 4GRI (GRIddle). With 3200hp on tap, the 4REPs (Restaurant Electro Pneumatic brake) were the most powerful 3rd rail EMUs in the world. Just 100hp less than a Class 55 Deltic... Their daily task was propellage/haulage of one or two unpowered 4TC units on Waterloo - Bournemouth/Weymouth trains, between Waterloo and Bournemouth, which they did superbly well, year in year out. None survive in preservation, but 2 driving motors from unit 2003 (3003) are in use as hauled ultrasonic test vehicles; 999602 999605. Just another Southern EMU, but a rare sight in this part of the world. A pair of 2HAPs -5633 (out of sight)+6159 pause at Redbridge with the 1812 all stations Bournemouth - Waterloo. The stoppers were normally the preserve of 4VEPs, with the occcasional CIG and BIG turning up. The appearance of these HAPs was exceptional. Sun13Jun71. Scanned
