Great Central Railway Loughborough Leicestershire 2nd June 2024

The GCR tried a new event this weekend running trains continuously overnight Saturday to Sunday. I was rostered to sign on at 04.00am on BR Standard 5 4-6-0 73156. We headed the 05.00 Loughborough to Leicester North service . On our return we went on shed where I serviced the loco cleaning the fire & emptying the ashpan. After rebuilding the fire we still had 2 hours before our next train at 09.30. This gave me time for breakfast on the shovel. The bacon had already been cooked & consumed and was followed by sausages. All very tasty & fried in a jiffy.

HBM Rugby Midland Warwickshire 27th October 2017

Brilliant sunshine on the platforms of Rugby Midland station as a Virgin Railways Class 390 Pendolino electric multiple unit runs into platform 1 with a train for Birmingham. Trains were badly delayed or cancelled due to a truck striking an under-bridge between Birmingham and Coventry. We took a London Midland Trains emu to Euston which was only 20 minutes late. HBM to everyone. Enjoy the start of a new week.

Du Toitskloof Western Cape South Africa 28th May 1982

An image from 42 years ago to the day on our road trip around South Africa. Driving up on the N1 to the Du Toitskloof Pass (820 metres, 2,690 ft) in the Hawequas Mountains east of Capetown heading north eventually to Kimberley. This road is now the regional route R101 since the opening of the Huguenot Tunnel on the N1 in 1988.

HFF Prince's Dock Liverpool 21st February 2019

The Prince's Dock footbridge on the riverfront of the Mersey in central Liverpool. The dock was named for the Prince Regent. Still unfinished, it opened on the day of the Prince Regent's coronation as George IV in July 1821. Ferry services from Prince's Dock finally ended in November 1981 when P&O Ferries closed their Liverpool - Belfast overnight service. The dock subsequently closed to shipping and was partly filled and since 2007 has been redeveloped with office blocks, a hotel and flats plus this bridge. HFF to everyone. Have a great weekend!

Denver & Rio Grande Zephyr Colorado USA 22nd October 1979

The beautiful gold and silver of the Denver & Rio Grande Railway on the locomotives and baggage car contrasts with the light covering of snow on the approach to Glenwood Canyon in the Rocky Mountains west of Denver. The conductor allowed me to take this view from the open door of our passenger train travelling from Denver to Salt Lake City (where we changed in the middle of the night to an Amtrak train to San Francisco). The lead locomotive is F9 diesel 5771. This was the last private long distance passenger train in the USA but it has long since been taken over by Amtrak. We were moving homes via San Francisco & Australia after a 2 year assignment in New Orleans to live in Medan, North Sumatra, Indonesia.
