Ancient Clam bridge at Wycoller.

This ancient bridge, situated in the hamlet of Wycoller in North-West England is made from a single monolith and is believed to be of neolithic origin (certainly at least 1,000 years old and possibly as old as Stonehenge) and is listed as an "Ancient Monument". Photographed with a Sony RX100 compact camera and processed with Nikon Capture NX2.

Hi Steve.....the bridge is part of a public footpath and is open to everyone. There are usually people being photographed on this bridge and you'll probably need to wait if you want a "people-free" photo (that happened this time too, when I took this photo).

This bridge is part of a route (footpath) which connects two main roads that run across the Pennines between Lancashire & Yorkshire so it probably was an important link in the past. The stone itself was originally a "standing stone" on the moors above the village, close to the site of ancient burial mounds. It was moved from the moors at some time in the past and since then has been used as a bridge. A few yards away is the site of a ford but when the river floods and is too high for the ford to be used the bridge can be used instead.
