Carousel

Carousel
Philadelphia Toboggan Company Carousel #62, built in 1922 and housed in the Looff Hippodrome (built in 1916) on Santa Monica Pier, California. It has 44 original hand carved and painted horses which were restored in 1990. This is the carousel featured in the movie "The Sting" starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford. In 1939, the carousel was moved to the Santa Monica Pier from the old Ocean Park Pier to replace the original Looff carousel. (IMG_2576)

Yes, not too many of the old ones remain today, although there has been somewhat of a revival. Modern carvers are carving new animals for zoo carousels and the like, which frequently feature endangered species.
