Saturday Self Challenge: Patriot

Saturday Self Challenge: Patriot
Article 1 of the Dutch Constitution of 1983 reads: "discrimination on the grounds of religion, belief, political affiliation, race, gender or any other reason is not permitted".
In this light the statue of Anton de Kom (Paramaribo, Surinam, 1898 – Sandbostel, Germany, 1945), born as a son of a born slave. In Surinam, in those days a colony of The Netherlands, he was engaged in the education of illiterate labourers in their rights. The colonial rule was afraid that this became disruptive and send him therefore into exile to The Netherlands. In 1934 his book “Wij slaven van Suriname” (We, slaves of Surinam) was published in The Netherlands. This book is about colonialism, exploitation and racism.
In 1940 Nazi-Germany invaded The Netherlands and his book became forbidden, De Kom joined the resistance, he saw in nazism the same kind of suppression as he was already fighting. In 1944 he was arrested for this en via camp Vught he was deported to the concentrationcamp Neuengamme in Nazi-Germany. Some days before liberation he died in camp Sandbostel, a subcamp if Neuengamme.
1960: His body was identified and buried on the National Cemetery of Honours in Loenen (NL)
1975: Surinam became an independent country.
1982: The Resistance Memorial Cross is awarded posthumously.
June 2020: His name was taken into the Canon of The Netherlands. This Canon is a list of 50 important topics of Dutch history.
