Begijnhof, found in Amsterdam city center, was founded in1346 by a group of women who wished to live in a religious community without the rigid rules of a cloistered life. They did not take vows, but lived as lay sisters dedicating their lives to the poor and ill. Today the community houses elderly ladies of limited income and who live alone, and who pay a nominal rent.
