Nanton Christmas Bird Count, 21 December 2014

I tried lightening this image even more, but then found that I lost the colour of the sky. The original was just a black silhouette and a richer sky, but thought I would lighten a little to show a bit of feather detail. I do have a shot or two of a different Sharp-tailed Grouse, taken in "proper" light, that I will post later. www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Sharp-tailed_Grouse/id en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharp-tailed_grouse The LAST Nanton Count was originally supposed to have taken place on 28 December 2013, but the weather forecast warned of a Flash Freeze, and so it was postponed till 5 January 2014. The weather was bright and sunny for us that day. However, photos taken on that day did not show how brutally cold it was! On the hour-long drive south of Calgary, we hit -34C (-29.2F)!!!!! It did eventually warm up a few degrees and thankfully, there was no or very little wind, which makes all the difference. The only walking we had to do was when we called in at various farms and homesteads. One backroad in particular had too much snow on it, so we had to leave that one out. Also, there was just too much snow in many of the farmyards, so we weren't able to check out all the trees and bushes as thoroughly as we would like to have done. I absolutely love the scenery on this Count, so I was able to get a few shots to show some typical snowy landscapes. As usual, I didn't get many birds photos, but I was thrilled to get a few shots of one of the Sharp-tailed Grouse. There were two of them on the fence at this farm. THIS year's annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count for the town of Nanton was so different from last year's Count, with more snow mainly seen only from the higher roads, making the roads so much easier to drive, and temperatures that were much milder (-7C). As usual, I didn't get many birds photos, but I was very happy to get a shot or two of Sharp-tailed Grouse. I absolutely love the scenery on this Count, so I was able to get a few shots to show some typical landscapes. This old vehicle, a Rambler, was seen when we called in at what might have been some kind of camp ground or park. It was just sitting there, begging to be photographed. "Rambler was an automobile brand name used by the Thomas B. Jeffery Company between 1900 and 1914, then by its successor, Nash Motors from 1950 to 1954, and finally by Nash's successor, American Motors Corporation from 1954 to 1969. It was often nicknamed the "Kenosha Cadillac" after its place of manufacture." From Wikipedia. There it was, right near where we pulled into a farmyard and there it stayed while we took a few photos. They are such beautiful birds and I always look forward to seeing them on this Bird Count. I seem to remember that I was looking towards the sun when I took this photo, plus it was heavily overcast. THIS year's Nanton Count was so different, with snow seen only in places, making the roads so much easier to drive, and temperatures that were much milder. After the Count, we returned to the meeting place at the home of Leah and Bill, where they had prepared a delicious supper that they so generously provide each year for us (as well as a breakfast snack). You couldn't wish for a nicer, more welcoming family (includes their son, Mike, who puts in a lot of effort organizing this annual Count each year, as well as taking part in the Count itself). LAST year's (2014) annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count for the town of Nanton was so different from last year's Count, with more snow mainly seen only from the higher roads, making almost all the roads so much easier to drive. Temperatures were much milder (-7C), too. As usual, I didn't get many birds photos, but I was very happy to get a shot or two of Sharp-tailed Grouse. This old vehicle, a 1963 Rambler, was seen when we called in at what might have been some kind of camp ground or park. It was just sitting there, begging to be photographed. "Rambler was an automobile brand name used by the Thomas B. Jeffery Company between 1900 and 1914, then by its successor, Nash Motors from 1950 to 1954, and finally by Nash's successor, American Motors Corporation from 1954 to 1969. Needless to say, seeing five (or 6?) distant Golden Eagles was a real treat! I love the landscape in this area, in the SW quadrant of the Count circle for Nanton - rolling hills that are beautiful at any time of year. The PREVIOUS Nanton Count was originally supposed to have taken place on 28 December 2013, but the weather forecast warned of a Flash Freeze, and so it was postponed till 5 January 2014. The weather was bright and sunny for us that day. However, photos taken on that day did not show how brutally cold it was! On the hour-long drive south of Calgary, we hit -34C (-29.2F)!!!!! It did eventually warm up a few degrees and thankfully, there was no or very little wind, which makes all the difference.
