I think I made the right decision to save the snowflake on red to post as my main Christmas greeting to you all, LOL. It suits a white winter day much better than the snowflake on black that I posted the other day : ) As you can see, the process of melting had begun, hence a not-quite-perfect snowflake - but its beauty is still there. I'm so glad I made myself go out into the bitter cold that day, as we haven't had that kind of snow since. Wishing each and every one of you (who celebrates Christmas) a very happy Christmas, and I hope that you are fortunate enough to celebrate with family and friends. I send a special wish to those of you who spend Christmas alone for one reason or another. Everyone, have a safe, healthy and happy time, and I wish all of you all the very best in the New Year! I am so lucky to have you all as friends, both here in Calgary and overseas, more recent friends and those of you whom I have known for many, many years - and family (Rachel, my youngest daughter, here on Flickr) and my brother, John, in England. Simplicity

A friend very kindly invited me to go south of the city today to a place called Frank Lake. The weather was overcast for a good part of the morning but the sun did finally come through just before we returned home. We saw a great variety of birds, which was a real treat. Most were far away in the distance, but I have been able to bring them a little closer with cropping. I just liked the patterns made by the reeds in the Lake and their reflections.

Black-capped Chickadee

I think I just liked the light and the background of this one. I know I've posted a few photos of birds on the hand before, LOL, and no doubt will keep posting the occasional new one. Taken at Bebo Grove, Fish Creek Park, on November 13th, same day as we saw the tiny Northern Pygmy-owl.

With a sprinkling of bokeh

Another of the beautiful Columbines at Reader Rock Garden, taken just a couple of days ago. The weather always seems to be windy when I go there, LOL. Another long day out today, botanizing the Bearberry Prairie Natural Area, north west of the city. Had supper and fell sleep in front of the TV very briefly and now discover that I had uploaded my photos earlier but hadn't typed descriptions or anything. I have all sorts of things to get done this evening, as I have another unearthly early start tomorrow morning, as we will be going out to the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains to record all flora and fauna seen there. Finding it really tough going this year, partly because whatever is causing my ongoing cough/lung problem (for almost a year now!) is making me feel quite unwell. Thankfully, our outings seem to be at fairly flat places so far - wouldn't be able to manage steep hills feeling like this : ( All being well, I should be out for a long day of botanizing on Sunday, too, in Kananaskis. Had rain on our trip today, but managed to get a handful of photos that should be OK, which I still need to download to my computer.

Frosted feather

Found this small feather dotted with ice when walking along the edge of the Bow River this morning. Not sure, but I think it belonged to a male Mallard.

Calypso Orchid

A beautiful Calypso Orchid seen in the forest at Maclean Pond, off Elbow Falls Trail (Highway 66), Kananaskis, way back in early June. I can never get the whole flower in focus - tends to be the striped part that comes out sharp, but I think that's my favourite part anyway, because of the texture and pattern. It has a definite glisten to it : ) Reminds me of something, but I can't think what. I know, a glass slipper : )

Light

Once again, I'm not sure how this turned out this way - just checked the Exif data, and the flash was not used. Just a small mushroom with a cap maybe 1" across, found at Brown-Lowery Provincial Park on September 7th.

Oh, no - she's BACK!

I spent about an hour or an hour and a half yesterday just watching this family of Ground Squirrels. There was no sign of my Great Horned Owl family in their grove of trees - more roadworks going on just a few feet away from their trees, which may have had some effect. So, my camera turned to these furry little creatures. This one was in the middle of making its tiny screeching sound and I found its expression rather amusing! Actually, I burst out laughing when I saw the photo on my computer!!!
