Clarendon Building, Oxford

Clarendon Building, Oxford
The Clarendon Building designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor was built between 1711 and 1715. It was built to house the Oxford University Press. In 1829 the University police took over part of it as their police station with cells in the basement. It only became known as the Clarendon Building after it was adapted by the University for use as a registry in 1832. It continued as the university registry until the present University Offices were opened in Wellington Square in 1975. The Clarendon Building was then taken over by the Bodleian Library.

A very beautiful building with an interesting history Roger. I was surprised to read about the university police taking over a part of it as a university police station with cells in 1829. I look at the wonderful building and see it as a place of peace and learning but this seems to tell a different story!!!

Well captured

The mellow stone is always a joy to see, especially in such a beautiful building! You caught it very well, it cannot be easy to get a photo of the whole building.

Thank you very much, Gudrun. Yes, not at all easy to get a photo of complete building. Almost have to try and push myself into the brickwork behind where I stand but I still struggle :-)) Have actually recently bought myself a wide angle lens so will soon be back to see if this helps :-)))

Enjoy your new lens! You'll have to figure in some allowance for perspective correction because wideangle lenses often distort more but that's part of the fun-)

Thanks so much for the advice, Gudrun. I've just found out about more distortion.....yes it is going to be fun :-)))
