Waddesdon Manor

Waddesdon Manor
Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild wanted an estate where he could escape London in the summer months to entertain family and friends for weekend house parties. In 1874 he came into an inheritance and purchased a bare agricultural estate in Buckinghamshire. The foundation stone for the house was laid in 1877 and six years later, in 1883, the house was completed surrounded by a beautiful landscape. Running water for the house was provided from the start and electricity was provided in 1889.

In 1957 James de Rothschild bequeathed Waddesdon to the National Trust and in 1959 it was opened to the public. It is managed by the Rothschild Foundation on behalf of the National Trust.

Waddesdon Manor is some 8 miles from home and it normally takes me roughly 20 minutes to get there. However, there are extensive HS2 works (high speed rail link initially from London to Birmingham) taking place on the approach to Waddesdon so I am always expecting to be held up by traffic lights :-)

The first stage between London and Birmingham is due to be competed by December 2026 so there may, at some point in the distant future, be an opportunity to photograph some trains :-)

I remember joining the NT with my then girlfriend back in the 80s and we discovered that this House was the only NT property anywhere near where we lived! So we visited it once and then let our membership lapse, which was OK because we needed it most of all in Cornwall for car parking and in those days we could use our parents' membership cards (although something tells me that this is not possible these days!).
A fine shot anyway, Roger!

Thanks very much, Andy. Yes, probably not possible to use parent's membership cards these days. In recent times they put in a new car park and provided buses running from the car park to the house. I have recently started going to Waddesdon regularly and rather than use the bus I would take the 20 minute walk to the house via a reasonable pathway. On my last visit I was feeling a bit jaded so decided to take the bus that was always free. I don't know when things changed but the bus trip cost £2.50 even if you only used it one-way. I don't think I am mean but £2.50 did seem a bit steep to me. Will be walking in future methinks!

Reminds me of the shock I had in 2011 when I flew into London from Madrid with a view to staying with friends overnight in Pinner before getting the train down to Redruth in Cornwall to stay for the summer with my parents.
I had to get from Luton Airport (which meant that it was an EasyJet flight from memory) to Pinner, ie mainline, then Metropolitan line out to Metroland! Well I don't think I've yet recoverd from the shock of the cost. I had been used to 1980s prices (Red Ken subsidies I suppose) and lack of quality in the services but although I had to say the service was good and the trains and stations clean, I spent almost my entire holiday money before I even set foot in Cornwall!

I think it has always cost "an arm and a leg" to travel most anywhere here, Andy :-))

What a beautiful and impressive looking building Roger, and the grounds are lovely. My initial thought was that it was a lovely French castle. It is good that it is so close to you. A terrific capture.

Have a lovely weekend

Hi Carol. Spot on re a French connection :-) I had to look up the following :-)
"Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild wanted the exterior of the house to be in the style of the French Renaissance châteaux of the Loire valley and engaged a French architect, Gabriel-Hippolyte Destailleur."
Thank you very much for complimenting my photo. Wishing you a lovely Sunday.
