How's Your Headache?

How's Your Headache?
A field of poppies....no, not the well known red ones ... these are opium poppies. And they're being grown legally! Tasmania is one of the few places to grow opium for medicinal purposes, to be made into medical drugs such as morphine and its derivatives: including codeine for aches and pains. So, if you celebrated New Year too enthusiastically, these may be relevant. :) Don't try going through the surrounding fence though! (see note).

Thank you for your comments, everyone, your comments have prompted me to dig for more details on poppies. It seems there are many varieties, all containing opiates, but the opium poppy Papaver somniferum (also grown as a flower) is the only one grown as a field crop. Most production comes from Turkey, India and Australia, but it has recently been introduced as a crop in the UK. As Prairie Rambler has noted, don't be caught cutting the pods if you have them in your garden! :)
