Tacoma Narrows Bridge

21 Apr 2014 2 5 309
Connecting the Kitsap Peninsula with the city of Tacoma, Washington state, USA. Looking south. Its predecessor is notorious as the suspension bridge that flew apart in a high wind, back in 1940, due to inadequate damping for certain resonances. The bridge was rebuilt in 1950, using the foundations of the original but otherwise new. A second, parallel bridge opened in 2008. It now carries southbound traffic, while northbound traffic uses the original. We're on the new bridge here, which also includes a bike/foot path. The 1950 bridge is to the left; it has the towers containing three crosspieces.
