California - Manzanar

WW II internment camp for Japanese-Americans, in California's Owens Valley in the shadow of the Sierra Nevada. Most internees were native-born Americans whose only crime was their ancestry. At least the US government finally had the grace to belatedly (1980s!) apologize to the survivors and their descendants. The area is now a US National Historic site. "Manzanar" means "apple orchard" in Spanish ("manzana" = "apple") and refers to the previous use of the land.
