10-21-22(Panaca_Summit_kilns)

An extraordinarily well-preserved set of charcoal kilns in the mountains west of Panaca, Nevada. They were used to make charcoal for the smelters in Pioche, Nevada and surrounding areas. They were built by Italian stone masons and have much better construction than many other surviving kilns. Note, for example, that the main portal at the base is a stone arch rather than a steel beam. (One arch has been propped up by a wood frame for preservation--it's obviously not original!) They were in use until about 1890, when the smelter in Bullionville closed.
