Burn

25 Aug 2019 2 2 267
Aftermath of the Canyon Creek fire, looking east off US 395 about 10 miles south of John Day, in eastern Oregon. The fire, which was lightning-caused, burned over 110,000 acres (44,500 ha) and 40 homes in August, 2015. The inset shows a view a bit more to the right, where they managed to stop the flames' advance. August, 2015 was a bad year for Oregon wildfires--there was another huge fire (of which I also have some aftermath pix) about 70 miles northeast near Baker City. Resources were stretched--

Unity Lake, a reservoir on the headwaters of the Burnt River, in eastern Oregon. There's a nice state park and campground here. Looking pretty much west.

Unity Lake, a reservoir on the headwaters of the Burnt River, in eastern Oregon. There's a nice state park and campground here. The foreground shrubs catching the light are sagebrush. The inset shows a view a bit more to the left. Looking a bit north of west. Unity Lake was in the path of totality of the August 2017 eclipse; a campsite was not to be had then!

Wallowa Lake

26 Aug 2019 2 3 570
From the boat ramp (visible to right) at the north end of the lake. The triangular mountain in the middle is actually the cross-sectional profile of the ridge separating the East (to the left) and West Forks of the Wallowa River. Mt. Howard, the location of the tramway, is on the left. Wallowa Lake is a glacial lake, about 300 ft (90 m) deep in the middle, whose level has been raised slightly by a small outlet dam for water storage, as is common throughout the American west. A prominent lateral moraine extends along the east side of the lake. Its upstream end is visible at the extreme left; the inset shows a more extensive view. Again, it's "wuhl-OW-uh," "OW" as in "town."
