Last Chance Creek
Near Babcock Meadows, Plumas National Forest, California. We were here with the kids over 20 years ago, in summer when the water was a lot lower, and saw lots of crawdads (crayfish) in the creek--which the kids found very intriguing! We didn't see any this time, but the water is a lot deeper and also muddy, so they're probably still there but better hidden. We also saw bear sign, and figure that a bear would treat a crawdad as a crunchy snack! The right inset shows another view of the creek; the left shows the results of flooding from the extraordinary water season a year ago.
An old railroad grade, abandoned in 1957, follows the creek along here. It was a timber railroad run by the Clover Valley Lumber Co. I'll post on it at some point--
