Sierra Buttes and Upper Sardine Lake

Sierra Buttes and Upper Sardine Lake
Northern Sierra Nevada, California, looking more or less west. If you enlarge the photo you can barely make out the fire lookout on the summit. The Sardine Lakes were evidently so named because some early prospector left some rusty sardine cans! The lake elevation is about 5995 ft/1827 m; that of the fire lookout at the summit is 8591 ft/2619 m. As with most of these Sierra Nevada lakes, the level was raised by a small outlet dam, for water storage, probably around the turn of the last century.

Jean-louis Thiaudiere, Liliane LR, Bergfex, and 19 other people have particularly liked this photo

Thanks to all! As I indicated, no one goes to California just to see the Sierra Buttes, but it's a nice area even so.

Great mountain scenery and a fun name;-) I wonder about the tree stumps, were the trees waterlogged and didn't like wet feet?

Thanks! The lake is natural, but like most of these Sierra lakes it has been enlarged slightly with a small outlet dam, for water storage. Even Lake Tahoe has a 3 meter dam at its outlet that was built in the early 20th century. I think the stumps are probably from trees that were drowned when the dam here was built, probably about a century ago.

Well, it least it adds variety! Not just another "Blue" Lake, or "Granite" Lake, or "Deer" Lake, or "Bear" Lake, or whatever...
