Petroglyphs

Petroglyphs
Parowan Gap, Utah. I've gone ahead and geotagged the pic because they're right on a paved road, complete with BLM interpretive signs, and are even shown on the Utah atlas. So there's no point in pretending the site is little-known! The insets show more petroglyphs in the area.

People hack the rock faces off and "take them home" or they deface the petro's with modern stuff.

That's a very great shame, and must be difficult to stop given remote locations. Several years ago, in Barry Island in South Wales, UK, someone cut out some dinosaur footprints impressed in rock. Luckily, they were recovered eventually. Probably in a museum now.

In a word, yes. It's now considered bad form to be too explicit about the exact locations of places that aren't well known. Elsewhere on Ipernity, Meadowmom has some pix of petroglyphs for which the signposts have been removed, to try to stem the vandalism.
