Mama Coyote

Mama Coyote
A coyote pair was working the crowd along California State Route 190 at the north end of Panamint Valley, just inside Death Valley National Park. They should be safe so long as they stay inside the park. People on the road were paying no attention to the "don't feed the coyotes" signs! This female is obviously lactating, so there must be a den with whelps not too far away. CA 190 is the main route into Death Valley from the west, so it's mostly tourist traffic.

William Sutherland, , Francis Taylor have particularly liked this photo

Yeah--and it's really bad when coyotes that are used to handouts wander out of the park and get shot because they're not wary of people.

Thanks, everyone! I got a couple pix of Papa Coyote too, but he was more skittish, for whatever reason. Maybe Mama was more desperate because of her litter.
