Walker Lake
Mineral County, Nevada, USA. Looking north. The sump of the Walker River; which rises in the Sierra Nevada and flows east, its level is set by the balance between river inflow and evaporation. The shorelines on the opposite side below the highway show how much the lake has dropped since the arrival of Euro-Americans, due to irrigation diversions upstream. The very highest shorelines, however, above the highway are from pluvial Lake Lahontan and are much older. The highway is US 95.
