Pyramid Lake

Pyramid Lake
Pyramid Lake Paiute Reservation, Nevada, USA. The lake lies entirely within the reservation, and you have to buy a permit from the tribe to boat or fish. It's the sump for the Truckee River, which exits Lake Tahoe and ends up here. The level of the lake is set by a balance between inflow and evaporation. It's dropped a lot since the arrival of Euro-Americans due to upstream diversions, but a set of lawsuits and legal actions has ensured that it will drop no more. An island (Anaho Is.) important as a bird nesting site was about to turn into a peninsula, which would have made the nesting birds vulnerable to coyotes and other predators.

There seems to be a small dam on the Truckee just east of where it flows into the lake, is that simply for the fishery?

I would think so, but I don't know for sure as I haven't seen it. Derby Dam in Truckee Canyon, alongside I-80, diverts some of the Truckee for the Newlands Project in Fallon--a canal actually carries water over to the Carson River, where it enters Lahontan Reservoir just above the dam--but I gather that's not what you're referring to as it's a lot farther upstream.

There's a sign for it on 447, I'm fairly sure it's right near the fishery.
