Thanks! The objects you asked about are poplar trees! They've partly died back because of a lack of water. Almost certainly they mark the original site of a ranchhouse or cabin. They were (and still are) popular as ornamentals and hedge trees because of their fast growth. They're water hogs, tho, so once the property is abandoned they tend to die back due to not getting watered routinely. It's common to see clumps and rows of partly or completely dead poplars marking the sites of abandoned habitations.
