Stripes

Stripes
Uploaded for the Vintage Photos Theme Park theme of: STRIPES
For the week of October 6 - October 12, 2025.
This couple are sporting distinctive stripes - the woman in a striped dress with ruffled sleeves and the man with a striped shirt under his waistcoat.
Are they going somewhere special? Perhaps to a parade or church function? Perhaps a friendly visit to the neighbors?
No available information, so we’ll never know.
This is a glass plate negative, found several years ago in East Middlebury, Vermont, in a now closed antique store.

Hey, just realized a couple of hours ago that this is a fence picture as well as a VPTP one!
HFF friends - wishing everyone a good weekend!

Thanks, Xata! I agree - but can’t help thinking of the immense effort it took to dress like this.
I hope your weekend is going well!

Thanks so much, Roger! It was a very satisfying find.
It’s sometimes hard to judge the quality when going through boxes of glass plate images - but this one turned out to be a gem!

Thanks, Carol! The matching outfits really make me wonder if they were in a parade.
Glass plates negatives rarely come with any identifiers though, so we’ll never know!

Thanks, Peter! I appreciate your visit and kind comment. The whole image seems to be carefully set up - almost cinematic, isn’t it?
If only we knew what the story behind it was!
Happy (even later) HFF! Hope your weekend was a good one.

Oh! This is a gem, Deborah. Two sets of stripes, excellent focus and tone, and it aroused a flood of curiosity about the subjects. That poor woman seems so tightly sinched up. I hope she didn't pass out during the ride.

Thanks, Rick! I was pretty happy to see the details and the quality of the picture once it was processed - as you can only see it as a negative in the store!
Sadly, the woman was probably used to the constriction. : (

My daughter and her husband rented a Victorian home near Boston and as they toured the house with the realtor, they came to a very small room at the top of the stairway on the second floor. Lauren commented on the small size of the room and the realtor told them it was a "fainting room" a space that Victorian women could retreat to if their constricting garments were causing them to feel faint.

Wow! That’s wild. I was just talking to someone who told me she had read that the “whalebone corset stories" were all widely exaggerated, (It was someone's thesis) I thought “I guess you haven’t seen the old photographs I have”.
Your daughter’s story would have furthered my resistance!
Years ago, I went on a tour with some friends to a few houses in Bristol. One of the houses was a large Victorian and the owner, dressed up a little like Miss Haversham, showed us a room that was her “hat room”.
Yep, a room that only held her collection of hats.
