I think this is the epitome of dull but having spent my formative years in Illinois there is a comfortable familiarity to it. I can smell the mowed grass and I'm ready to drive, windows down, another tedious three hours.

Childhood landscapes are powerful. I think it's not unusual for people to hold them up as "the real land" for the rest of their lives.
