Helen Lemmens-Sherrington by Stereoscopic
Helen Lemmens-Sherrington (1834-1906); English soprano.
In 1856 she started her career as a concert singer. In 1860 she made her debut on the opera stage as Maid Marian in Macfarren’s opera “Robin Hood” (with Charles Santley and John Sims Reeves). In 1864/65 she made her debut at Covent Garden in the Royal English Season. In 1866/68 she performed with the Italian Opera at Covent Garden. Her most memorable roles were Adalgisa in “Norma”, Donna Elvira in “Don Giovanni”, Elisabeth in “Don Carlos”, Isabella in “Robert le diable”, Prascovia in “L’Etoile du Nord” and Marguerite in “Faust”. She was married to the Belgian organist and composer Jacques-Nicolas Lemmens (1823–1881). After she retired from the stage she was working as a singing teacher in Brussels, London and Manchester.
