Karl Speigler by Obermüller
Karl Speigler (1838-1889); German bass.
He started his career in 1854 as a choir singer at the “Hoftheater von Karlsruhe”, but gradually he was allowed to sing small solos. His rôles became little by little more important and eventually he was one of the most prominent members of the “Hoftheater von Karlsruhe”. He remained at Karlsruhe the rest of his life; seven days before his early death he still stood on the stage. In 1872/73 he made very successful guest appearances in Berlin and in New York. His most memorable rôles were Sarastro in “Der Zauberflöte”, Van Bett in “Zar und Zimmermann”, Leporello in “Don Giovanni”, Osmin in “Die Entführung aus dem Serail”, Mephisto in “Faust”, Marcel in “Les Huguenots” and Sir John Falstaff in “Die lustigen Weibern von Windsor”.
