Nationaal Militair Museum 2015 – Nazi recruitment poster

The Nazis had the idea that the Dutch, Flemish, Danes and Norwegians were closely related to the Germans, so that they could be recruited in the Waffen-SS. For Himmler this was also a method of increasing the number of the Waffen-SS, because in Germany the intake to the Waffen-SS was restricted to 2% of overall intake to the armies. Nationaal Militair Museum 2015 – Nazi propaganda poster for working in Germany

While the Netherlands and Britain fought wars over the control over the seas and the colonies, since Napoleon Dutch diplomacy turned increasingly towards Britain to protect the Netherlands against French and German plans to control the entire continent. The Nazis tried to wean the Dutch off this British influence. On this poster some British wrongdoings against the Dutch are listed as a bill: 1652–1654 First English War 1665–1667 Second English War 1672–1674 Third English War 1780–1784 Fourth English War 1802 Robbery of Ceylon 1806 Theft of the Cape 1899 Usurpation of the Transvaal 1942–1944 Bombings of Dutch residential areas 1944 Shootings of civilians and trains After the Second World War Dutch diplomacy became “Atlantic”, i.e. turned towards the USA, to protect against the French-German axis and the Soviet Union. Nationaal Militair Museum 2015 – V2 rocket

The Netherlands was an important launching ground for these German rockets. Because the rockets could not be stopped once fired, the counter measures mostly consisted of bombing the railway supply lines. Unexploded bombs are still found to this day in the Netherlands next to railway lines and bridges. The Dutch National Military Museum was opened in 2014. Nationaal Militair Museum 2015 – Enigma machine

The German coding machine. The machine could produce an unbreakable code, but sloppy operational standards of the Germans and clever decoding work with the aid of an early computer at Bletchley Park meant that the codes could be broken. Nationaal Militair Museum 2015 – Nazi propaganda poster for working in Germany

Having no job in the Netherlands during the German occupation was dangerous, as you could be forcibly recruited to work in Germany. You could also volunteer of course, which this poster is trying to achieve. The Dutch National Military Museum was opened in 2014.
