Phaistos was inhabited from about 4000 BC and it was an important centre of Minoan civilisation. When the first palace was destroyed by an earthquake, a second one was built, but it was destroyed too around 1400 BC. It remained inhabited until around 160 BC, when it was destroyed by the neighbouring city of Gortyn. It was discovered in 1884, but further excavations took place until 1971.
