When the pope dies, there is no immediate successor, as the pope is elected by cardinals. Between the death of the old pope and the coronation of the new one, the seat is vacant, or sede vacante. The Vatican postal service issues a sede vacante stamp during this period. As they are only sold in a short period of time, they are relatively rare.
