Strasbourg 2025 – Musée Alsacien – New names for streets and squares after the French Revolution

“The municipal body, in order to remove the traces of feudalism and superstition, which are still present in the inscriptions of several streets and squares of this Commune, believed it necessary to change the names of the streets and squares, which, by their Gothic denomination, recall the memory of the old regime and offend the eye of the republican; consequently, after having heard the report of the administrator of public works, and having heard the Prosecutor of the Commune, it decided on the following changes.

Le corps municipal, pour faire disparaitre les traces de féodalité et de superstition, que présentent encore les inscriptions de plusieurs rues et places de cette Commune, a cru devoir faire changer les noms des rues et places, qui, par leur dénomination gothique, rappellent le souvenir de l'ancien régime et blessent l'oeil du républicain; en conséquence après avoir entendu le rapport de l'administrateur des travaux publics, et ouï le Procureur de la Commune, il a arrete les changements ci-après.”
