Maeslantkering 2019 – Rotterdam mayor Aboutaleb

The Maeslantkering is a storm surge barrier built between 1991 and 1997. It protects Rotterdam and other low-lying lands when the water is high. It also blocks the access to Rotterdam Harbour, so the important shipping is blocked. The barrier has to be tested from time to time, it is done on a Sunday to minimise the disruption.
