Oradour-sur-Glane 2014 – Ossuary

Oradour-sur-Glane 2014 – Ossuary
As the bodies of the victims were burnt and thrown in mass graves, the remains could not always be identified. The remains were put in this ossuary. It was paid for by the survivors and families of the victims, as they did not want to use the ossuary made by the French government.

On June 10, 1944 the town of Oradour-sur-Glane was surrounded by the Germans. The population was rounded up and murdered. The houses were looted and set on fire. The next day the burnt bodies were thrown in mass graves. After the war it was decided to leave Oradour in the condition it was as a reminder. In total 642 people were murdered.
