Anegang

Anegang
Some streets have strange names, in The Hague Apendans and in Haarlem for instance Raaks and here, Anegang. Anegang probably meant "connecting road", but other etymologies exist.

To indicate the position of a gas pipe or a water mains in the ground or a valve of those pipes, I'm not entirely sure. It indicates the position, so 3.3 meters to the right and 2.3 meters down (or from the building, I'm not entirely sure).

Here are some other examples:

An old sign to indicate a power cable?

Fascinating, and eminently practical.

There is/was a system in England where pipes and cables were covered by sand and then soil as an indicator to anyone digging of the proximity of such objects.

I think it was even more sophisticated but I cannot recall, age again ;¬)

I did some research and it indicates the connecting point from the main line. Modern signs have different colours and letters for the different utilities (gas, water, fire hydrants, mains). The sign can indicate diameter of the tube and the location (from the building or object and to the left or right of the sign).

Now I know how to locate subterranean Dutch utility infrastructure, I can hardly wait to visit ;¬)

Seriously (but only for a moment) thank you very much for taking the time to find out, I appreciate well researched subjects, nice one!
