Indeed. In Europe cities are a mix of architectural styles, but in the Emirates the cities only have buildings from the 1970s onwards, and not the best looking ones either.

Did you visit the Arabian mainland when you were out there working on an oil rig?

Yes in the early seventies, but it was like a huge building site in the cities in the Middle East for that was when they began having fantastic amounts of oil revenue.

On reflection the cities back then looked much better as sites than the alleged finished articles, except Beirut of course, which was beautiful unlike now ;¬(
