The whole of coastal Catalonia was used by the Romans as part of a route towards Hispania Ulterior (Further Spain). Around 10 BC Roman Emperor Augustus created the Roman colonia of Colonia Iulia Augusta Faventia Paterna Barcino (Barcino) to protect the safety of the northern stretches of the southbound and inland route and to control the maritime traffic using the River Llobregat. COL(oniae) IVL(iae) AVG(ustae) FAV(entiae) PAT(ernae) BARCIN(onis) IIIIII VIRI AVGVSTAL(es) Plaque with the city's name, dedicated to the Barcino colony by the Divus Augustus priests. Dated around 110-130 AD, it comes from Plaça de Sant Miquel. It could have been fixed to a door, possibly at the Divus Augustus College, near the baths, or on the gate. Milestone
