Pandemic chalk
Chalk on our front walk, March 2020 to present.
Pandemic chalk: The Duchess, with flowers

This was the chalk at my house on April 30; by May 1, it was blurred by an unexpected overnight rain. But for one day, it looked pretty good!

Working on a chalk drawing this week based on a portrait of Sibylle of Jülich-Cleves-Berg, Margravine de Burgau (1557-1628).
Pandemic chalk: Grouchy rabbits
| |
Based on a Japanese woodblock print from the 1930s by Shoson Ohara, but not even close to as elegant or subtle as that. I did this quickly on the first decently warm morning with no rain in the forecast.
Pandemic chalk: Princess Mononoke (completed)
| |
For a brief break between storms I made a chalk drawing based on Princess Mononoke for my daughter's birthday.

Pandemic chalk: 35 Hearts, faded
| |
We had rain this winter; this is not always the case, so we're very grateful. But it isn't kind to chalk art.

I'm hoping to make it to 35 but it might rain tonight--and 5x5 makes a good square photo.
Pandemic chalk: After Takahashi Shotei
| |
This was as far as this one went, unfinished, before the rain came again. Based on a woodblock print by Takahashi Shotei.
Pandemic chalk: Yaichan
| |
Current chalk on our walk for Christmas week is Yaichan, the mascot of the Japanese town of Yaizu--a friendly shark holding a tomato. (We're expecting a visit from Yaizu for the holidays.)
Pandemic chalk: La llamada 1
| |
A new visitor to our walk, in time for Halloween, based on Remedios Varo's "La llamada" (1961).
Pandemic chalk: Return to Belmont Shore 4

Today I got to do chalk at an actual event again, in Belmont Shore neighborhood of Long Beach. They put down paper for the chalk art, so I can do some things that aren't practical on pavement.
This one was inspired by collage and ephemera, and those "Man in the Moon" -type vintage photos.
And it won Honorable Mention at the event. :)

Pandemic Chalk: The Seeker 5

Now The Seeker is offering a small jack-o-lantern to a black cat.
Update: This chalk was washed away about 36 hours after this photo was taken, by a very welcome thunderstorm. Onward!

For October 2022, our front walk features a chalk adaptation of Hannah Frank's "The Seeker" (1931). The carpet of small flowers that merges with the figure's skirt was the easiest part to imagine into colors.
