Don't Call Me Project

Don't Call Me Project
We were at Otis over the weekend for the graduate students' open studios. Son participated in a project by Carol Zou, the Don't Call Me Project, which is about street harassment and labeling and identity, etc. Had to pick a word that wasn't an obvious taboo--something that would spur conversations. This worked.

It seemed to really puzzle folks who assumed "special" was the right word, polite, better than [x]. I explained that "special" and "equal" can't mean the same thing; if someone's special, they're an exception, and specialness can easily become an excuse to exclude. We left the sticker on all week, so his teachers saw it at school, carers saw it, etc. Interesting experience. I think Carol's project is a success, because it certainly provoked conversations.
