Oosterdam Cruise Vacation 2015

On a cruise with many diverse and exciting sights and experiences, perhaps the most memorable was cruising in the vicinity of White Island which is New Zealand's only active marine volcano. Situated in the Bay of Plenty, east of North Island, its 321m are impressive enough but another 1300m lie below the sea as the structure rises from the seabed. Built in 1919 as an integral part of the port of Sydney, Jones Bay Wharf was redeveloped in 2003 as a privately owned commercial marina. 200_2_P1040206C

The development of Sydney is nowhere better symbolised by the multi-use construction at Barangaroo. This is a 'docklands' development of the sort seen around the world as shipping and stevedoring give way to the activities of the modern day. Work started in about 2009 and is due for overall completion in 2023. 200_2_P1040213C

The Sydney destination of the Holland America Oosterdam was the White Bay Cruise Terminal at Balmain. The terminal is modern and easy to use but much less convenient than the more prestigious Ocean Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay. There are no direct public transport links but we did not have a problem getting a taxi. 200_2_P1040215
