Inspection Invited - 26 September 2020
This simple image appears upon closer inspection to reflect a lot of Penzance history but my research has also uncovered something of a mystery deepened by knowing that the internet is often just plain wrong. The sign shown is above the shared entrance of what are today Mr Billy's café and Seaway Insurance which also incorporates an agency of Yorkshire Building Society. The address is listed as 13-14 Market Place as was the address of former occupants Meeks the Furnishers. A tiled entranceway with the name on it confirms their historic presence. However, all the (online) maps I have looked at show the road on to which this fronts as being The Greenmarket. Market Place is a little further north and parallel to Market Jew Street. To compound the confusion, neighbouring businesses such as Amelia's and Antony Richards also list their addresses as Market Place.
