Station architecture in the 19th century was undeniably grand but inside Budapest Keleti (1884), the image is somewhat tarnished. In fact, the site is a strange mixture of modernisation and neglect. In the foreground is the open space above a concourse accommodating the Metro station and some shops. This concourse level has steps up to the station platform level but, as far as I could see, no escalators. The station itself and a small circulating area around some poor eateries and the toilets are grubby and slightly crumbling.
