When The Past Gazes Upon The Present - 14 July 2013

When The Past Gazes Upon The Present - 14 July 2013
The remains of Holy Rood Church are both appropriate and moving. It is important that Southampton has chosen to integrate them into a city which was extensively damaged in and altered by the the Second World War. The original church dates back to 1320 and was damaged in November 1940. Long known as the Church of the Sailors, it has been preserved as a memorial and garden of rest dedicated to those who served in the Merchant Navy and lost their lives at sea. In this intentionally challenging composition, we gaze through the window of the past upon the modern building behind the site.
