According to the NHS website common-or-garden chest infections normally last 7-10 days and one should only bother a doctor if the symptoms persist for longer. My temperature is slightly lower today, but the cough is so bad that if I still had one, I'd wear a hacking jacket.

I agree with the NHS website and wouldn't dream of bothering a doctor with symptoms like that, as these things generally go away by themselves. But it would seem advisable in your case, in view of your past experience.
