Marvellous view geologically so recent! In this place there were very active volcanoes roaring loud and scaring sailors at distances where the island wasn't visible. In the 14th century, around 1320, those volcanoes exploded: that could be heard hundreds of miles far, and all the smoke thus generated could be seen equally far. Sete Cidades Lagoon is now what is left from such explosion(s). It brought about curiosity enough to make Portuguese sailors travel there, over one century later, starting the discovery of the Azorean islands.
