Writer, record label owner, musician, producer and actor Peter Rafelson and Gardner Cole wrote "Follow Your Heart" for Cyndi Lauper. The song was presented to Madonna (Ciccone) for her third album.

With the titled changed to "Open Your Heart" (Madonna - Gardner Cole - Peter Rafelson) Madonna transformed the song and in 1986 it topped the Billboard chart while hitting the top ten almost everywhere else. The track is on the number one album "True Blue".
