Robert Plot, Natural History of Staffordshire (1686)..."the gatehouse of Tixall Hall seat of Walter Lord Aston, an eminent encourager of this design, is a curious piece of stone work, well worthy of notice; and is here presented with the house......it is remarkable also that the windows of the house, though very numerous, are scarce two alike..."
